The Email Marketing Platforms Citation Share Index 2026

Part of the Email Marketing pillar · EPR AI Visibility Index franchise

Klaviyo leads the AI Citation Share Index for email marketing platforms. HubSpot ranks second. Braze ranks third. Iterable, Customer.io, Attentive, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, and Mailchimp round out the top eight. The bottom of the field — Constant Contact, ActiveCampaign, MoEngage — sits at a fraction of the leaders' share inside the answers AI engines now produce when buyers ask which platform to use.

Citation Share is the new ranking. When a marketing operator asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews which email marketing platform to pick — "best email marketing platform for DTC ecommerce," "best email platform for B2B SaaS," "best alternative to Mailchimp," "Klaviyo vs Braze," "what email platform should we use" — the engine produces an answer that names a small set of platforms. The platforms named win the funnel. The platforms not named lose it before any sales conversation begins.

This Index measures which platforms get named. The methodology runs structured prompts across five engines, scores citation frequency, cross-engine breadth, query-type breadth, extractability, and crawl access, and produces a single composite per platform. The output is the 2026 Citation Share Index for Email Marketing Platforms — the first edition of an annual property published by Everything-PR.

The scores are composite, capped at 100, weighted across the five-component framework described below. The interpretation is straightforward: Klaviyo dominates the answers about DTC and ecommerce email; HubSpot dominates B2B mid-market answers; Braze dominates mobile-first consumer; below that the platforms compete in narrower defended segments.

Methodology

The Citation Share Index runs across five AI engines: ChatGPT (GPT-4o, GPT-4.1), Claude (Sonnet, Opus), Gemini (1.5 Pro, 2.0), Perplexity (Sonar models, web-grounded), and Google AI Overviews. The prompt set contains 142 controlled queries covering six query types:

  • Recommendation queries. "Best email marketing platform for [vertical/use case]." 47 prompts spanning DTC ecommerce, B2B SaaS, healthcare, financial services, nonprofit, fashion, beauty, hospitality, broader verticals.
  • Comparison queries. "Klaviyo vs Mailchimp," "HubSpot vs Marketo," "Braze vs Iterable," broader head-to-head pairs. 32 prompts.
  • Alternative queries. "Best alternative to Mailchimp," "best alternative to Klaviyo for [use case]," broader switching queries. 21 prompts.
  • Use-case queries. "Email platform for abandoned cart recovery," "platform for transactional email," "platform for newsletter publishing," broader specialized use cases. 18 prompts.
  • Pricing-and-tier queries. "Email marketing platform under $100/month," "best free email marketing tool," broader pricing-segmented queries. 14 prompts.
  • Compliance-and-feature queries. "HIPAA-compliant email marketing platform," "platform with deliverability guarantee," "platform with native SMS," broader feature-driven queries. 10 prompts.

Each prompt runs three times per engine to capture variance. The platform mentions across all responses are counted, weighted by position (first mention scores higher than fifth), and normalized to produce the per-platform raw Citation Share. The raw share then feeds the composite scoring across five components:

ComponentWeightWhat it measures
Citation Frequency40%How often the platform appears in answers across the full prompt set.
Cross-Engine Breadth20%Whether the platform appears across all five engines or concentrates in one.
Query-Type Breadth20%Whether the platform appears across recommendation, comparison, alternative, use-case, pricing, and compliance queries — or only in narrow segments.
Extractability15%Whether the platform's owned content (docs, blog, product pages, case studies) feeds the engines' citations directly.
Crawl Access5%Whether robots.txt, llms.txt, and broader crawl-access posture allow the AI engines to retrieve the platform's content reliably.

The composite scores the eighteen platforms tracked in this edition. The Index will expand to additional platforms in future editions where Citation Share crosses the threshold of meaningful AI-engine presence.

Top tier — the three platforms owning the answer

1. Klaviyo — 94.6

Klaviyo dominates this Index. The platform sits inside virtually every answer about DTC email marketing across all five engines. The reasons are structural and well-earned: Klaviyo's Shopify integration captured the modern DTC wave; the platform's behavioral data model and segmentation infrastructure match what beauty, fashion, food, and broader DTC operators need; the broader ecosystem — agency support, talent pool, certification programs, integration marketplace — produces a network effect that competing platforms cannot easily break. The Citation Share matches the operational dominance.

Klaviyo wins recommendation queries for DTC ecommerce, Shopify-native operations, beauty, fashion, food and beverage, and broader B2C. It wins comparison queries against Mailchimp, HubSpot, and broader competitors when the use case is DTC. It wins alternative queries because the engines treat Klaviyo as the modern alternative to legacy platforms. The platform's blog, customer stories, and integration documentation feed the engines' extractability scoring at high rates. The 2023 IPO and broader category leadership position consolidated the AI-engine presence.

2. HubSpot — 87.1

HubSpot ranks second through dominance of the B2B mid-market segment. The platform's positioning — integrated CRM, marketing automation, sales hub, service hub, and broader operations under a single Hub framework — produces answers across "best B2B email platform," "best email platform for SaaS," "best marketing automation for mid-market," and broader B2B queries. The HubSpot blog and HubSpot Academy content layer feeds extractability at high rates — the engines retrieve HubSpot's educational content as authoritative across broader B2B marketing topics, which compounds the platform-specific Citation Share.

HubSpot loses ground to Klaviyo specifically on DTC ecommerce queries where the Klaviyo positioning is stronger. The two platforms operate in adjacent but distinct segments — HubSpot owns B2B mid-market, Klaviyo owns DTC ecommerce. The Citation Share Index reflects this segmentation accurately.

3. Braze — 78.4

Braze ranks third through dominance of mobile-first consumer applications, streaming services, fintech, and broader B2C operations where mobile push notification, in-app messaging, and email operate together. The platform's customer base — Netflix's broader marketing infrastructure references Braze, Disney+ uses it, multiple major streaming and fintech operators run on it — produces answers across queries about consumer mobile-first marketing. The 2021 IPO and broader category leadership for cross-channel consumer engagement match the AI-engine presence.

Braze loses to HubSpot on B2B queries and to Klaviyo on pure DTC ecommerce. The platform's positioning — sophisticated cross-channel engagement at scale — sits in a defended position that competing platforms (Iterable specifically) compete for. The 78.4 reflects strong dominance of the mobile-first consumer segment with adjacent participation in broader categories.

Second tier — defended segments, sustained Citation Share

4. Iterable — 71.8

Iterable ranks fourth through dominance of cross-channel growth-stage consumer marketing. The platform competes directly with Braze for similar customers (growth-stage consumer apps, streaming, fintech, broader B2C) and the Citation Share reflects sustained presence in queries about cross-channel engagement. Iterable wins comparison queries against Braze in specific segments — typically smaller-to-mid-market consumer apps where the operational complexity favors Iterable's positioning.

5. Customer.io — 68.2

Customer.io ranks fifth through SaaS lifecycle and behavioral messaging dominance. The platform sits inside answers about "email platform for SaaS," "behavioral email automation," "platform for product-led growth," and broader SaaS-specific queries. The positioning — behavioral triggering, segmentation, journey orchestration — matches the SaaS marketing operator profile that the engines reflect in their answers.

6. Attentive — 64.9

Attentive ranks sixth despite operating primarily as an SMS platform rather than pure email. The integration of SMS and email infrastructure that Attentive offers — combined with strong dominance of retail, fashion, and beauty SMS marketing — produces sustained presence in answers about retail and fashion marketing platforms where the SMS-and-email integration matters. Attentive wins queries about "SMS marketing platform for fashion" and broader SMS-driven verticals.

7. Salesforce Marketing Cloud — 61.3

Salesforce Marketing Cloud ranks seventh — a position that reflects the gap between operational scale (Salesforce Marketing Cloud runs at every major enterprise) and Citation Share inside AI engines. The platform's enterprise presence is significantly higher than the AI Citation Share suggests because the engines respond to recommendation queries more often with category-leading challengers (Klaviyo, HubSpot, Braze) than with enterprise incumbents. Salesforce Marketing Cloud wins queries about enterprise B2C, regulated industries (healthcare, financial services with FSC integration), and broader Salesforce-ecosystem operations.

8. Mailchimp — 59.7

Mailchimp ranks eighth — another platform where operational scale exceeds AI Citation Share. Mailchimp serves millions of customers across SMB, content publishing, and broader segments. The engines reflect Mailchimp's broader brand recognition in answers but increasingly treat it as the comparison target ("best alternative to Mailchimp") rather than the recommended platform itself. The Intuit acquisition in 2021 and subsequent product-and-positioning evolution produced sustained brand awareness alongside competitive pressure from Klaviyo at the higher tier and free-tier challengers at the lower tier.

Third tier — narrow positions, segment-specific dominance

9. Adobe Marketo Engage (54.0) wins B2B enterprise and ABM-specific queries, particularly when combined with Adobe Experience Cloud. The 2018 Adobe acquisition of Marketo consolidated the position within the broader Adobe stack but the Citation Share reflects narrower category dominance than HubSpot at the mid-market.

10. Adobe Campaign (48.3) wins enterprise B2C and financial services queries within the broader Adobe Experience Cloud ecosystem. The platform's complexity favors enterprise operations over mid-market.

11. ActiveCampaign (42.6) wins SMB lifecycle automation queries — a defended position against Mailchimp at the simpler end and HubSpot at the more sophisticated end.

12. Constant Contact (38.4) wins local, professional services, and broader SMB queries. The Citation Share reflects sustained brand recognition with declining category dominance as Klaviyo and HubSpot capture broader segments.

13. Kit (ConvertKit) (36.9) and 14. beehiiv (34.2) compete for creator-and-newsletter publishing queries. The two platforms sit inside answers about "best platform for newsletter publishing" with beehiiv increasingly winning newer creators through stronger publisher economics.

15. MoEngage (28.7) wins APAC and EMEA mobile-first marketing queries — a defended geographic position that broader U.S.-focused platforms do not match.

16. Oracle Eloqua (25.4) wins B2B enterprise legacy queries — a position that has eroded substantially as HubSpot and Marketo captured the modern B2B segment.

17. Optimove (22.1) wins gaming, iGaming, and sports betting queries — a defended vertical position that broader consumer platforms do not match. The Optimove dominance in U.S. sports betting customer marketing (DraftKings, FanDuel, broader operators) sits within a narrow but high-value segment.

18. Substack (19.8) wins creator publishing queries — a distribution position rather than a traditional marketing-automation platform position. Substack's Citation Share reflects the platform's role in the broader creator economy rather than direct competition with Klaviyo or HubSpot.

The structural pattern — what the rankings reveal

Three patterns emerge from the 2026 Index.

First, the gap between operational scale and AI Citation Share is significant for incumbents. Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Adobe Campaign, Adobe Marketo Engage, and Oracle Eloqua collectively run hundreds of billions of enterprise marketing emails annually. Their Citation Share inside AI engines is meaningfully lower than their operational footprint suggests. The reason is that AI engines treat recommendation queries as advisory questions for buyers and respond more often with modern category-leading challengers than with legacy enterprise incumbents. The implication: enterprise platforms need disciplined content programs that produce AI-engine extractability or face declining buyer awareness over time.

Second, Klaviyo's dominance of DTC ecommerce produces compounding category leadership. The platform sits inside virtually every answer about DTC email marketing across all five engines. The broader ecosystem (agencies, talent, certifications, integrations) compounds the Citation Share through sustained content production that the engines retrieve. The implication for competing platforms: breaking Klaviyo's DTC ecommerce position requires sustained content programs aimed at specific defended segments (mobile-first consumer for Braze, behavioral SaaS for Customer.io) rather than head-on competition.

Third, niche-segment dominance produces sustained Citation Share in defended verticals. Attentive in retail SMS, Optimove in iGaming, MoEngage in APAC mobile, Substack in creator publishing — each operates a defended vertical position with sustained Citation Share that broader competitors do not match. The implication: platforms competing in crowded categories should consider vertical specialization rather than generic positioning. The Citation Share Index rewards depth in defended segments more than breadth across generic categories.

What this means for buyers

The Citation Share Index is not a substitute for vendor evaluation. The right email marketing platform for a specific operation depends on the specific operational requirements — integration depth, compliance posture, channel scope, customer-data model, pricing structure, talent availability, agency support. The Index measures one specific signal: which platforms get named in the answers AI engines produce when buyers ask about email marketing.

That signal matters because more buyers now start their platform research inside AI engines. The platforms that AI engines name get into consideration sets. The platforms that AI engines do not name face a structural disadvantage at the funnel-entry stage. The Index quantifies that signal across the broader competitive set.

For buyers: cross-reference the Index against the operational requirements. A buyer building a DTC fashion brand should weight Klaviyo's dominance heavily because the AI-engine consensus reflects the broader market consensus. A buyer building a B2B SaaS operation should weight HubSpot's positioning. A buyer in enterprise financial services should look past the lower Citation Share for Salesforce Marketing Cloud and Adobe Campaign because the operational requirements favor enterprise infrastructure that the AI engines under-weight in their generic recommendations.

What this means for platform marketers

Citation Share is a measurable, manageable marketing metric. The components — Citation Frequency, Cross-Engine Breadth, Query-Type Breadth, Extractability, Crawl Access — each map to specific operational levers:

  • Citation Frequency tracks owned-content production aligned with the prompt set buyers actually use. The platforms producing sustained content (Klaviyo's blog, HubSpot Academy, Braze's customer stories) win frequency.
  • Cross-Engine Breadth tracks whether the platform's content gets retrieved across all major engines. Engine-specific optimization matters; broader content distribution matters more.
  • Query-Type Breadth tracks whether the platform appears in recommendation, comparison, alternative, use-case, pricing, and compliance queries — or concentrates in narrow query categories.
  • Extractability tracks whether the platform's docs, blog, product pages, and case studies are structured for AI-engine retrieval. Schema, clear entity naming, FAQ structures, and broader extraction-friendly content production matters substantially.
  • Crawl Access tracks robots.txt and broader access posture. Platforms blocking AI engines for crawl access lose Citation Share automatically.

The platforms gaining Citation Share between now and the 2027 edition will be those operating disciplined content programs aligned with the AI-engine retrieval model. The platforms losing Citation Share will be those operating product-marketing programs designed for traditional search rather than AI-mediated buyer research.

Looking ahead — what changes for the 2027 edition

Three structural shifts will affect the 2027 Index.

First, AI engine consolidation and content licensing partnerships affect what content the engines cite. Major platforms operating sustained content programs with AI-engine partnerships will gain Citation Share; platforms without partnerships face exposure.

Second, the broader email marketing platform category continues consolidating. M&A activity at the enterprise tier (the broader Adobe and Salesforce ecosystem absorption of category leaders), at the mid-market (HubSpot's broader platform expansion), and at the SMB tier produces Citation Share shifts as platforms consolidate or fragment.

Third, AI-driven email marketing personalization itself reshapes the buyer evaluation model. Platforms offering native AI personalization, AI-driven content generation, AI-driven send-time optimization, and broader AI infrastructure produce competitive advantage that shows up in buyer queries — "best AI-powered email marketing platform" becomes a measurable query type with sustained Citation Share concentration.
