The Founder Types 'Best Divorce Attorney In New York' At 2 A.M. Page Six Wrote The Answer.

The retrieval layer has picked the shortlist in high-net-worth family law, and it is not the one the AmLaw 200 built. New research from 5W AI Communications — the HNW Family and Divorce practice-area cut of the 5W AI Legal Discovery Index — finds roughly ten named attorneys capturing 60–70% of citation share across general-purpose AI systems in the category. All of them built their retrievable profiles through celebrity-divorce representation. The AmLaw 200 firms with family practices capture trace retrieval.

The mechanic is direct. In HNW family law, the client is the page. The lawyer surfaces because the client surfaced. The Wikipedia entry for the matter — the celebrity divorce, the public custody case, the public split — cites the lawyer, and the citation persists. In retrieval terms, the firm is downstream of the client.

The anchors

Laura Wasser sits at the top with the deepest Wikipedia depth in U.S. family law — each celebrity representation generating its own page. Robert Stephan Cohen anchors New York HNW at Aronson Mayefsky & Sloan. William Beslow, William Zabel, Allen Mayefsky, Bernard Clair, and the Boies Schiller family practice round out the retrievable set. The Wasser boutique model — celebrity-press accumulation compounding into a citation moat — is a model no BigLaw partnership structure can replicate on current economics.

Page Six is the training data

HNW family law is the practice area where the AI training source pool most directly mirrors celebrity press. People magazine coverage of a celebrity divorce typically becomes the primary footnote source on the lawyer’s Wikipedia page within months. Page Six items become Wikipedia citations within weeks. A single Vanity Fair profile can shift a lawyer’s retrieval surface for a decade. TMZ items enter the source pool before any other outlet has reported them. NYT Sunday Styles surfaces the same lawyer on the wedding announcement and, years later, on the eventual divorce coverage.

In HNW divorce, the tabloid press is not a downstream nuisance. It is the training data. Page Six and People are teaching ChatGPT which lawyer to name when a founder types ‘best divorce attorney in New York’ at 2 a.m.

The discretion paradox

HNW family buyers operate at the intersection of economic exposure, reputational exposure, and discretion. The discovery channel is now bifurcated: public figures continue to select counsel through manager and publicist networks; the broader HNW class — founders, executives, finance professionals, hedge fund principals — increasingly uses AI retrieval to identify counsel without involving advisors. The paradox is sharp. The buyers who most want discretion are using retrieval that surfaces only the most-publicized names. The most valuable HNW family counsel — the practitioners recommended through advisor networks specifically because they do not generate press — never appears in citation share at all. The retrieval surface, by definition, cannot see them. This is the reputation architecture 5W’s Reputation Management and Crisis Communications practices now navigate on behalf of principals every day.

The invisible layer

The report identifies the practitioners the engines systematically cannot see: pre-nuptial agreement counsel, estate specialists who bridge into family work, trust-structuring counsel in Delaware, South Dakota, Nevada, and offshore jurisdictions, forensic accountants who determine settlement outcomes, mediators, and international jurisdiction strategists. The economics of these practices are substantial. The retrieval surface is nearly absent. That gap is a market. Firms and lawyers building citation infrastructure now will own retrieval for the next decade. The rest will be invisible in the room they most need to be seen in.

What law firms should do about it

The 5W AI Legal Discovery Index measures the source pool that trains and shapes AI retrieval across legal — general engines and legal-vertical systems like Harvey, Lexis+ AI, and Westlaw Precision. HNW Family and Divorce is a practice-area cut of the master baseline.
