In 2014, Hodinkee was a single-author blog about wristwatches. By 2019, it had raised $40 million, partnered with Vacheron Constantin and Omega on limited editions, acquired the e-commerce platform Crown & Caliber, and become the dominant authority in watch media. By 2024, it had reorganized twice, lost three CEOs, divested Crown & Caliber, and faced sustained criticism inside its own enthusiast community.
In 2026, it is still the most-cited watch publication in every AI engine. The gap between business condition and citation share is the cleanest example we have measured of how slowly LLM authority migrates.
Engines modeled ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews.
Inputs Publicly available domain authority and traffic data, observed citation patterns across watches & horology consumer-intent prompts, structural signals (expert-reviewer presence, schema implementation, crawl accessibility, training-data inclusion likelihood), and ownership consolidation across the editorial landscape.
Special For categories with single-publication dominance, citation share is benchmarked against alternative-authority emergence. Sticky-citation patterns are tracked across multiple research windows.
Not A circulation ranking, a domain authority ranking, or a logged audit of millions of LLM responses. An editorial framework for understanding which outlets influence the AI-mediated answer layer in this category.
§ 01 — The Headline FindingThe structure of the answer layer.
One publication — Hodinkee — anchors the watch answer layer. The independents, the forums, and the YouTube creators fill the remaining tiers. The print legacy is invisible.

A Blog to Watch

What is striking: print legacy outlets do not appear in Tier 1 or Tier 2 at meaningful rates. WatchTime, International Watch (Iwatch), Revolution (smaller digital), and the watch sections of GQ, Esquire, and Robb Report all exist. None of them carry the citation weight their print authority would suggest. Watches is the category where legacy magazine authority and AI citation authority have diverged most cleanly.
The microbrand boom — Christopher Ward, Baltic, Lorier, Halios, Studio Underd0g, and a hundred smaller — is largely invisible in AI answers. AI engines, trained on legacy authority, route enthusiast queries to Hodinkee and Worn & Wound. Those publications do cover microbrands, but a microbrand that exists outside the established editorial graph effectively does not exist inside AI retrieval. That is a category opportunity gap.
YouTube creator content is the fastest-growing citation segment, particularly in Gemini. Bark and Jack, Teddy Baldassarre, and Federico Talks Watches anchor a creator-citation layer that is increasingly competing with traditional publications on technical and value queries.

Highest modeled citation share across the five major engines. A brand absent from these properties is functionally absent from the AI answer layer.

§ 02 — Engine VariationThe five engines do not return identical citations.
The same query produces meaningfully different sources across each engine. A brand seeking AI visibility needs to plan for all five — not optimize for one.
§ 03 — ImplicationsWhat this means for brands in the category.
§ 04 — Methodology Footnote
