PR Students Create Anti-Bullying Group as Part of National Competition

LEAPbullyingPR students from Seton Hall have created an anti-bullying group, LEAP on Bullying, aiming to lead, educate, act and prevent this phenomenon affecting students of all ages across the United States. This project is their entry for a national public relations competition, The Bateman, run by Public Relations Society of America. This PR competition encourages US students to focus their classroom education and internship experiences into creating and implementing a strategic public relations campaign.

Newly established group LEAP on Bullying is currently working together with the Newark-based Boys and Girls Club on raising awareness about the harmful consequences of bullying and educating young people in this regard. LEAP on Bullying plans to teach its partner’s club members to lead, educate, act and prevent bullying through fun and engaging activities. The program is already an effective one as it has managed to catch the eye of Newark Mayor Cory Booker and Giants defensive end Justin Tuck, who have responded to LEAP’s efforts via social network Twitter.

As part of their PR campaing, LEAP on Bullying will organize an anti-bullying week at the Boys and Girls Club of Newark in the week of February 17, and the LEAP on Bullying day – Saturday, February 23. The anti-bullying programs combine demonstrative, interactive and written activities and are designed for children of all ages, aiming to give them the tools they need to prevent bullying before it happens.

Children’s author, Gena Lewis, is another supporter of this initiative and will take part in the LEAP on Bullying Day, sharing her story with club members, hoping to inspire them to both pursue their dreams and support others’ in achieving theirs. To find out more about the group’s activities, visit their Facebook page and their Twitter account.

The Bateman competition runs from February 1 to February 28, period when student groups need to create and implement their PR program. After that period, contestants will submit their campaigns to the PRSA headquarters in New York.
