The food and beverage publications AI engines cite most — when buyers ask which products, brands, and restaurants are best — are Sporked, Taste of Home, America's Test Kitchen, The Kitchn, Food52, and Food Network. This is the first edition of Everything-PR's Food & Beverage Citation Rankings: a spot capture across ten buyer-intent queries, run on Google Search, measuring which food and beverage publications surface most as cited sources in AI-driven answers. A food and beverage publication is defined as an outlet with (a) a dedicated food, drink, or cooking editorial operation, AND (b) named food editors or test-kitchen staff, OR food and beverage as a substantial, ongoing coverage area, publishing original tasting, testing, or reviews. Excluded: brand-owned blogs, the products' own sites, marketplaces (Amazon, DoorDash), retailer category pages, Wikipedia, YouTube, Reddit, forums, Substacks, aggregators, and general news or business publications (Fortune, Forbes, Fox News) that surfaced only incidentally.

Topline finding
The food and beverage publications cited by AI engines are the ones running structured, repeatable taste-test and equipment-testing franchises with named testers and disclosed methodology. Sporked, Taste of Home, and America's Test Kitchen surface most often — and they share the same playbook: blind or panel-based product testing, a named test kitchen, and explicit "we tried them all" methodology the engines treat as primary evidence. The publications absent from the list — several household food-media names among them — lack a testing franchise the engines could pull from on buyer-intent product queries.
"The bots don't cite the prettiest food photography. They cite the test. Sporked, Taste of Home, America's Test Kitchen win because they blind-taste, they rank, and they show their work. If a brand isn't inside those tests, it isn't inside the answer. Earned media in the publications that test is the whole game now."

The Top 10 — Profiles
1. Sporked
The most active food publication in our capture. Sporked is a dedicated food-review publication in the Static Media network (which also operates Chowhound, Tasting Table, and Mashed), built entirely around professional taste testers who blind-taste and rank supermarket products. Its "we tried them all" format surfaced across four separate product categories — olive oil, hot sauce, sparkling water, and frozen pizza — exactly the buyer-intent product terrain where editorial competes hardest. The testing-first structure is what the engines reward.
Sample query: Best frozen pizza brands
What it surfaced: Cited via "The Top 15 Best Rated Frozen Pizzas from Our Many, Many Taste Tests" and "Best Thin Crust Frozen Pizza." Also surfaced on olive oil, best hot sauce, and best seltzer/sparkling water taste tests.
2. Taste of Home
The broadest surface footprint across distinct food categories. Taste of Home runs a physical Test Kitchen and publishes product rankings and "best of" collections that the engines pulled on meal kits, coffee, and olive oil. Its combination of a named test kitchen and consumer-facing product verdicts is precisely the authority signal LLMs elevate on product questions.
Sample query: Best coffee brands 2026
What it surfaced: Cited via "Our Experts Ranked the Best Coffee Brands of 2026." Also surfaced on "The Best Meal Kit Delivery Services" and "What's the Best Olive Oil You Can Buy? Our Test Kitchen Knows."
3. America's Test Kitchen
The lab-grade authority. America's Test Kitchen (home of Cook's Illustrated and Cook's Country) is cited for its rigorous, methodology-forward equipment reviews and supermarket taste tests. It surfaced on both a product query (olive oil) and an equipment query (chef's knives) — the kind of disclosed, repeatable testing the engines treat as a primary product-validation signal.
Sample query: Best kitchen knives 2026
What it surfaced: Cited via "The Best Chef's Knives of 2026" equipment review and "The Best Supermarket Extra-Virgin Olive Oil" taste test.
4. The Kitchn
A pure-play food publication (Apartment Therapy Media) with a signature "we tried them all" taste-test franchise. On the sparkling water query it surfaced as the lead cited source with a tested-and-ranked verdict. The disclosed sample size and named-tester format is the moat.
Sample query: Best sparkling water brands
What it surfaced: Cited via "The Best Sparkling Waters of 2026 (We Tried 13)" — surfaced as a lead editorial source on the query.
5. Food52
The community-plus-editorial hybrid. Food52 pairs a large cooking community with editor-run taste tests, and its multi-brand sparkling water taste test surfaced as a cited source. The combination of original editorial testing and community authority is a citation asset the engines pull on comparison queries.
Sample query: Best sparkling water brands
What it surfaced: Cited via "The Best Sparkling Water Brands (Trust Us, We Tried Them All)" — a 17-brand taste test.
6. Food Network
The largest consumer food brand on the list. Food Network surfaced through its product-reviews franchise on the chef's knife query, where its tested "best of" verdict competes directly with the test-kitchen publications. Brand authority plus a reviews operation is the combination the engines reward on equipment questions.
Sample query: Best kitchen knives 2026
What it surfaced: Cited via "7 Best Chef's Knives in 2026 Reviewed."
7. CNN Underscored
A tested-product reviews vertical that operates as a distinct editorial unit with disclosed methodology — the format LLMs prefer to consume product authority in. It surfaced on the kitchen knife query with a "tried and tested" knife-set verdict, mirroring the same testing-first pattern that carries the top of this list.
Sample query: Best kitchen knives 2026
What it surfaced: Cited via "Best kitchen knife sets of 2026, tried and tested."
8. James Beard Foundation
The prestige institution on the list. On the food-industry-trends query, the James Beard Foundation surfaced as a cited authority on restaurant and chef-driven trends — the heritage reference the engines route to for editorial, chef-side, and dining-culture questions rather than packaged-product verdicts.
Sample query: Food industry trends 2026
What it surfaced: Cited via "Top Restaurant Food Trends For 2026."
9. Chowhound
One of the oldest food publications on the internet, now part of the Static Media network. Chowhound surfaced on the frozen pizza query with a ranked, worst-to-best taste-test format. Long-standing food-editorial authority plus a ranking franchise is what the engines pulled on the category question.
Sample query: Best frozen pizza brands
What it surfaced: Cited via "15 Frozen Pepperoni Pizzas, Ranked Worst To Best."
10. The Whiskey Wash
The only dedicated beverage-editorial publication to surface, and the sole spirits authority on the list. The Whiskey Wash is a whiskey-focused editorial title with named contributors and repeatable value-guide franchises. On the whiskey query it out-surfaced retailers and forums with an editorial "best value" verdict — the pattern that gives beverage its lone seat in this edition.
Sample query: Best whiskey under $50
What it surfaced: Cited via "The Best Value Bourbons Under $50 for 2026 — Top 7 Picks."
What This Means for Communicators
Four things from this capture.
The engines cite the test, not the brand.
Every publication at the top of this list surfaced because it runs a structured product test — blind taste tests at Sporked, Test Kitchen rankings at Taste of Home, lab-grade equipment reviews at America's Test Kitchen. General food coverage, recipe libraries, and food photography did not surface on buyer-intent product queries. The testing franchise is the citation asset.
One network is quietly dominant.
Sporked and Chowhound both belong to the Static Media network, and Sporked alone accounted for four of the ten queries. A single publisher's testing-first architecture is out-citing far larger legacy food brands on packaged-product questions. Scale of brand is not the same as scale of citation.
Beverage is nearly invisible.
Across coffee, whiskey, and sparkling water, only one dedicated beverage-editorial publication (The Whiskey Wash) surfaced at all. On coffee, no qualifying beverage publication surfaced — the results were brand roasters and SEO listicles. For drinks brands, the earned-media testing surface barely exists yet, which is both a warning and an opening.
Named test kitchens beat named bylines.
In beauty, named editors were the moat. In food, the stronger signal is a named, institutional test kitchen — America's Test Kitchen, the Taste of Home Test Kitchen, Sporked's professional testers. The engines attribute authority to the testing apparatus, not only to the individual writer.
Notable Absences
Several publications widely treated as category leaders in legacy food-PR media lists did not surface in this ten-query capture: Bon Appétit, Serious Eats, Eater, Epicurious, Food & Wine, NYT Wirecutter, Delish, and Tasting Table. Two reads are possible. One — the ten-query sample missed them and the Phase 0 trend refresh will surface them. Two — on head-to-head buyer-intent product queries, these publications no longer carry the citation weight they carry inside legacy PR memory, because they lead with recipes and reportage rather than blind, ranked product tests. Either finding is meaningful for the next 90 days of food and beverage PR strategy.
Methodology
Engines tested: Google Search. Future editions will expand to ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews.
Query set: 10 buyer-intent prompts — best meal kit delivery services 2026; best coffee brands 2026; best olive oil brands; best protein powder 2026; best hot sauce brands; best kitchen knives 2026; best whiskey under $50; best sparkling water brands; best frozen pizza brands; food industry trends 2026.
Window: spot capture, August 1, 2026. Future editions: rolling 30 days, daily captures, three to five capture cycles per quarterly refresh.
Definition of "food and beverage publication": outlet with (a) a dedicated food, drink, or cooking editorial operation, AND (b) named food editors or test-kitchen staff, OR food and beverage as a substantial, ongoing coverage area. Outlets must publish original tasting, testing, or reviews. Republished syndication does not qualify.
Exclusions: brand-owned blogs and the products' own sites, marketplaces (Amazon, DoorDash), retailer category pages (Williams Sonoma, Caskers, HEATONIST, Pepper Palace), Wikipedia, YouTube, Reddit, forums, Substacks, aggregators (MSN, AOL, Facebook, Statista), small SEO sites, and general news/business publications (Fortune, Forbes, Fox News) that surfaced only incidentally.
Surfaces: the number of queries (out of ten) in which the publication appeared as a cited editorial source.
Note: one query — best protein powder 2026 — returned no qualifying food or beverage publication; the surfaced sources were general/health titles (Forbes Health, Men's Journal, Healthline) plus brand and SEO pages.
Caveat: single-engine, ten-query, single-cycle pilot. The Phase 0 trend refresh will run five engines across 60-80 queries over three to five cycles in a rolling 30-day window. Ordering inside the top 10 will shift meaningfully when the full capture runs — several publications here are separated by a single surface. The composition of the list is more stable than the ordering.
Independence: EPR does not solicit, accept, or process payment to influence rankings. Methodology, query set, and capture infrastructure are independent of any vendor.
