Index · AI Visibility · Companion to the Stablecoin Citation Share Index 2026. Methodology: 5W AI Communications Citation Index (locked) · Adapted unit: subreddit · Dataset: 200 buyer prompts × 5 engines × 4 verticals · 4,000 observations · April 28 – June 6, 2026.
The Hidden Source Layer
The Stablecoin Index showed which brands win inside the chatbox. This one shows where the chatbox gets the answer in the first place.
Across 4,000 observations spanning four verticals — crypto, finance, wellness, and B2B — Reddit is the single most-cited source layer the AI engines pull from. Not always the loudest. Always the most influential. In some verticals, more than 30% of an engine's answer traces back to a subreddit.
This is the Reddit Citation Share Index — the first ranked reading of which subreddits the AI engines actually cite when buyers ask the question. Companion to the Stablecoin Citation Share Index. Same locked methodology. Different unit. The unit here is the subreddit.
Headline finding: In each vertical, three to five subreddits do most of the work. The rest of Reddit, for AI-citation purposes, is noise.
Vertical 1 · Crypto
Crypto is the vertical where Reddit's grip is strongest. More than 30% of engine answers to safety and recommendation prompts trace back to a top-three subreddit. The dedicated crypto-Reddit piece — Why Reddit Decides Crypto's AI Citations — was built first for exactly this reason.
| # | Subreddit | Focus | Citation Share | Index Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | r/CryptoCurrency | General crypto | 18.4% | 91.2 |
| 2 | r/Bitcoin | BTC-specific | 14.7% | 84.6 |
| 3 | r/ethereum | ETH ecosystem | 11.3% | 78.9 |
| 4 | r/Solana | SOL ecosystem | 7.8% | 68.4 |
| 5 | r/defi | DeFi protocols | 6.9% | 64.1 |
| 6 | r/CryptoMarkets | Trading and markets | 5.2% | 58.7 |
| 7 | r/binance | Exchange-specific | 4.6% | 52.8 |
| 8 | r/algotrading | Quant and algos | 3.1% | 41.2 |
| 9 | r/btc | BTC alt community | 2.4% | 36.5 |
| 10 | r/CryptoTechnology | Protocol and tech | 2.2% | 34.8 |
What dominates: r/CryptoCurrency is the default. r/Bitcoin and r/ethereum are the project-specific anchors. Below the top five, citation share collapses fast.
What the engines look for: Voted answers, durable threads with project history, and explicit warnings. Crypto Reddit is treated as the human-consensus check against marketing-saturated trade press.
Vertical 2 · Finance
Finance is where Reddit replaced the broker. r/personalfinance is now the most-cited finance source the engines use when a buyer asks how to handle money — more than any single bank, brokerage, or trade publication.
| # | Subreddit | Focus | Citation Share | Index Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | r/personalfinance | Money basics | 21.6% | 93.4 |
| 2 | r/investing | Investing strategy | 15.8% | 86.1 |
| 3 | r/stocks | Stock-specific | 9.4% | 73.2 |
| 4 | r/financialindependence | FIRE and retirement | 8.2% | 70.5 |
| 5 | r/wallstreetbets | Trading culture | 6.1% | 61.8 |
| 6 | r/Bogleheads | Index investing | 5.4% | 58.7 |
| 7 | r/options | Options trading | 4.8% | 52.3 |
| 8 | r/SecurityAnalysis | Value investing | 3.7% | 46.1 |
| 9 | r/dividends | Dividend strategy | 3.2% | 41.9 |
| 10 | r/FinancialPlanning | Advisor-adjacent | 2.8% | 38.4 |
What dominates: r/personalfinance handles the foundation. r/investing and r/financialindependence handle the strategy. r/wallstreetbets is cited mostly as a cultural reference, occasionally as a market-sentiment signal.
What the engines look for: Cited threads with sourced answers and a sustained voting history. Finance Reddit is one of the few places where the engines will quote a comment as fact — because the comment has been ratified by thousands of voters over years.
Vertical 3 · Wellness
Wellness is the vertical where Reddit's role is most fragile — and most influential. The engines lean heavily on r/Supplements, r/Nootropics, and r/AskDocs because they read as user-experience data the marketing surface cannot fake. They also flag risk language aggressively. Brand attachments are punished, not rewarded.
| # | Subreddit | Focus | Citation Share | Index Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | r/Supplements | Supplement Q&A | 16.9% | 87.3 |
| 2 | r/Nootropics | Cognitive enhancement | 12.4% | 79.6 |
| 3 | r/AskDocs | Medical questions | 11.7% | 78.2 |
| 4 | r/loseit | Weight management | 9.3% | 71.4 |
| 5 | r/Fitness | General fitness | 8.1% | 68.5 |
| 6 | r/Meditation | Mindfulness | 5.6% | 58.9 |
| 7 | r/skincareaddiction | Skincare | 5.2% | 56.7 |
| 8 | r/StopDrinking | Recovery | 4.4% | 49.8 |
| 9 | r/Biohackers | Biohacking | 3.8% | 44.2 |
| 10 | r/GetMotivated | Self-help | 3.1% | 38.6 |
What dominates: r/Supplements and r/Nootropics drive supplement and longevity answers. r/AskDocs is treated almost as a medical-authority surface for non-prescription questions. r/loseit and r/Fitness anchor weight and exercise.
What the engines look for: First-person outcome reports, side-effect threads, and dose discussions. Wellness Reddit is the chatbox's de-facto evidence base for OTC and supplement queries — for better or worse.
Vertical 4 · B2B
B2B is where Reddit's role surprised us most. Engines reach into r/sales and r/marketing for tactical answers — discovery scripts, attribution debates, tool comparisons — that previously lived behind paywalls or in private Slack communities. The shift is making Reddit a primary source on commercial questions where it used to be peripheral.
| # | Subreddit | Focus | Citation Share | Index Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | r/sales | Sales operations | 14.1% | 82.6 |
| 2 | r/marketing | Marketing strategy | 12.8% | 79.3 |
| 3 | r/SaaS | SaaS founders and ops | 11.6% | 77.4 |
| 4 | r/Entrepreneur | Founder Q&A | 10.2% | 73.1 |
| 5 | r/sysadmin | IT operations | 8.7% | 69.8 |
| 6 | r/cscareerquestions | Tech careers | 7.3% | 64.5 |
| 7 | r/devops | DevOps practice | 5.9% | 58.2 |
| 8 | r/MachineLearning | ML and AI research | 5.4% | 56.7 |
| 9 | r/cybersecurity | Security operations | 4.6% | 51.3 |
| 10 | r/AskMarketing | Tactical marketing | 3.8% | 45.1 |
What dominates: r/sales, r/marketing, and r/SaaS run the commercial answers. r/Entrepreneur covers founder questions. r/sysadmin and r/devops are the operational ground truth on infrastructure and tooling.
What the engines look for: Specific tool recommendations with comparison threads, pricing discussions, and post-mortems. B2B Reddit is the chatbox's substitute for the private Slack and Discord communities buyers used to ask in.
Cross-Engine: Who Leans Hardest on Reddit
The engines weight Reddit differently by vertical. Reading the matrix is the point — an AI-visibility plan should flex by engine and by vertical, not be uniform.
| Engine | Crypto | Finance | Wellness | B2B |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Heavy | Heavy | Moderate | Heavy |
| Claude | Moderate | Light | Light | Moderate |
| Gemini | Moderate | Moderate | Heavy | Moderate |
| Perplexity | Very heavy | Heavy | Heavy | Heavy |
| Google AI Overviews | Light | Moderate | Very heavy | Light |
Perplexity is the Reddit engine
Across all four verticals, Perplexity reaches into Reddit harder than any other engine. If a buyer is researching inside Perplexity, the answer they get is substantially Reddit's view of the category.
Google AI Overviews leans on Reddit for wellness
A direct consequence of Google's content partnership with Reddit and its broader trust-signal recalibration. Wellness queries inside AI Overviews are now Reddit-anchored more than any other category.
Claude is the lightest Reddit user
Claude leans toward primary sources, regulator filings, and named experts. Reddit shows up — but as one input among many, not the dominant one.
ChatGPT is the most consistent
ChatGPT uses Reddit at moderate-to-heavy weight across all four verticals. It is the most predictable engine for brands building a Reddit citation strategy.
Methodology
The locked 5W AI Communications Citation Index formula, adapted from brand-unit to subreddit-unit measurement. Same five dimensions. Same weights. The Index is comparable across the Stablecoin Index, the Reddit Index, and every subsequent Index in the franchise.
| Dimension | Weight | Adapted for subreddit unit |
|---|---|---|
| Citation Frequency | 40% | How often a subreddit (or specific thread within it) is named or quoted in engine responses to vertical-relevant prompts. |
| Cross-Engine Breadth | 20% | How many of the five engines pull from the subreddit. A subreddit cited only by Perplexity scores lower than one cited everywhere. |
| Query-Type Breadth | 20% | Range of buyer intents the subreddit covers — recommendation, comparison, troubleshooting, sentiment, safety. |
| Extractability | 15% | Quality of structure inside the subreddit — durable threads, ranked answers, project pinning, wiki resources. |
| Crawl Access | 5% | Reddit-wide access policy and any subreddit-specific access restrictions. (Most subreddits = full access; private or restricted = penalized.) |
Engines tested
ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews. Each engine queried fresh, logged-out, three reads per prompt across different days.
Prompt set
200 buyer prompts total — 50 per vertical, grouped by intent. Crypto prompts mirror the stablecoin set. Finance covers personal finance, investing, and trading. Wellness covers supplements, fitness, and OTC health. B2B covers SaaS evaluation, sales operations, marketing strategy, and IT/devops.
Scoring the subreddit unit
A mention is counted when an engine response names a subreddit, quotes a comment, references a thread, or links to a Reddit URL. Anonymous paraphrases of Reddit consensus — language signals like "users report" or "common community opinion" — are tracked separately and reported as soft citations.
What This Means for Brands
If Reddit is the source layer, the brand's job is to be accurately represented inside the source layer. Not to game it. Reddit communities punish manipulation and the punishment becomes the citation. Five moves work.
1. Audit your subreddit footprint by vertical. Run the prompts. Read the threads the engines pull from. Know what is being said about you before you decide what to do about it.
2. Correct the record, transparently. When a top-cited thread contains factual error — wrong fee structure, outdated reserve data, retired product positioning — a factual, identified, sourced correction belongs in the thread. Not a defensive one.
3. Earn the AMA. Genuine, identified founder AMAs in the right subreddit produce durable, voted, retrievable content the engines will use for years. A well-run AMA is one of the highest-leverage AI-visibility actions available.
4. Monitor as standing infrastructure. Subreddit sentiment changes. What the engines say about you changes with it. Reddit monitoring is a Tier 1 reputation discipline now, not a periodic audit.
5. Never astroturf. Detection is near-certain in the high-citation subreddits. Detected manipulation becomes the dominant thread. The dominant thread becomes the dominant citation. The downside is asymmetric and durable.
Why Reddit and not other community platforms?
Across the 4,000-observation dataset, no other community platform — Twitter/X, LinkedIn, Quora, Stack Exchange, Discord, Slack communities — comes close to Reddit's citation share. Reddit's structure (topical subreddits, voted answers, durable URLs) is closest to what answer engines want. Other community platforms appear in citations; none lead any vertical.
Why these four verticals first?
Crypto, finance, wellness, and B2B were chosen because each has dominant subreddit ecosystems with five-plus years of indexed depth, and because they represent the four buyer-intent profiles where Reddit's role is most distinct. Future Index releases will extend to beauty, travel, entertainment, automotive, and consumer brands.
Are private or invite-only subreddits counted?
They appear in the dataset when engines reference them, but score lower on the Crawl Access dimension. Most top-ranked subreddits are public. A private subreddit can be high-influence with its members and low-influence with the chatbox — and the chatbox is the audience that scales.
How is sentiment treated?
Sentiment is a weighting factor inside Citation Frequency, not a separate dimension. A subreddit that produces high-citation negative threads about a brand contributes negatively to that brand's separate Citation Share — but positively to the subreddit's own Index Score in this Reddit Index. The Reddit subreddits are measured on influence, not on whether they like the brand.
How often is this Index re-run?
Quarterly, aligned with the Stablecoin Index and the broader 5W AI Visibility Index franchise. The next reading is September 2026.
