US Election, iPhone 5 and Kim Kardashian Topped Yahoo!’s Searches in 2012

People get caught in the daily rush of activities, and barely get the chance to look at things from a wider, more comprehensive perspective. But such analysis of overall activities, trends and so on shouldn’t be missed by any marketer. The online social trends, top news stories of 2012, viral fads of the year and daily search habits were some of the important findings revealed today by Yahoo! in its Year in Review report.

2012 was definitely the year of the US elections, and that is a fact reflected by this top too. Elections were the first item on the list of overall top searches on Yahoo! in 2012, followed by iPhone 5, Kim Kardasian, Kate Upton and Kate Middleton. Celebrities and gadgets are the items which draw the most attention from online users. The Olympics, another important event of the year, was also among the top ten searches in 2012. In the gadgets sector, Apple is a definite king, followed by Samsung. Call me maybe, by Carly Rae Jepsen, was the most searched song, followed by Psy’s YouTube hit Gangnam Style and Someone like you, by Adele.
Another interesting top revealed today is the one of how-to searches on Yahoo! which presents itself like this:

Some of the findings are only confirming what we have all noticed when browsing online, or different news we read. However, there are some interesting findings – for instance that the top searched song isn’t all the times the greatest success on YouTube. The different tops could help marketers across all industries get a better look at the trends in 2012 and what was a big hit in their fields. Of course, it is necessary to compile these findings with other reports and their own analysis in order to have the desired success in the online environment.
